Knowing God, chapter 3 (part 2)

The first two chapters of J.I. Packer’s Knowing God provide the foundation for the rest of the book– which is why we’re taking them slowly. It’s important that we grasp their key idea well before we spend the rest of January delving into the character of God in the following chapters.

Hopefully you will have had time to read all of chapter 3 (provided as a download in yesterday’s post — just scroll down to access the file). Take time to consider the following:

  1. What four analogies does J.I. Packer highlight from the Bible which describe our relationship with God? What do they have in common?
  2. As an exercise in Christian meditation, look up the following verses in your bible and copy them (in your best writing!) into your journal: John 17:3; Jeremiah 9:23; Psalm 139:1-3; John 10:27-28. Having thoughtfully written these verses out, read them aloud. Now, talk to God in response to what you have been reading in the scriptures.

Reading these chapters has been a wonderful revelation of what it means to truly know God and be known by him . This means I can rest assured that I am accepted by Him , no matter what and my identity is in him, I can trust him with whatever life brings, being content in the knowledge that he loves me and knows me intimately. Thanks Stu for sharing it with us and I look forward to the next chapters !

I agree. Chapters 2 and 3 have been really formative for me– I keep coming back and reading them again and again.
