The Jealous God, “Knowing God”, chapter 17

Do not worship any other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.

Exodus 34:14

…for the LORD your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.

Deut. 4:24

The notion that God is, by nature, jealous might seem to be some kind of character flaw. And yet, he describes himself in this way throughout the bible. How can it be ‘good’ that our God is a Jealous God. For J.I. Packer’s explanation, read chapter 17 of Knowing God (download below)

Some questions to aid your reflection:

  • Of the two kinds of jealously described in chapter 17, why is the second kind “good”?
  • Why should jealousy for God produce zeal in us? How might you stir your zeal for God?
