The Dangerous Duty of Delight, by John Piper

Chapter 1: Treating Duty as a ‘Delight’ is Controversial

Our book for the month of March is short but punchy. And it might change our lives! The book can be purchased here. The first two chapters are available as a free download here:

Piper begins the book by asserting that, “Christian Hedonism is a controversial name for a old-fashioned way of life.” The joy of knowing God himself, and obeying his commandments, is a joyful activity.

” But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace,…”

Galatians 5:22

For Reflection

Having read the first chapter (download above), prayerfully consider the following:

  • Do you see yourself as a ‘joyful’ Christian? Would others see you as a joyful Christian?
  • When Paul tells the Galatians that joy evidences the working of the Holy Spirit in a person (Gal 5:22-23), what might that actually look like in a person’s life? Do you know a joyful Christian?
  • What is your initial response to the first chapter of this book?
