What happens when we try to put a foot in each camp� to walk with both God and the world? We end up being rejected by God, spat from his mouth. The letter to the Laodocians gives clear instructions as to what should be done if we find ourselves in that situation of compromise with the world.

The church had Sardis looked pretty good. They had a reputation for being alive. But in truth, there were only a few faithful ones. They are encouraged to persevere in faith, while the others are given a very stern warning. This letter shows how God views the importance of our inner lives.

What is the secret of contentment? Paul says that freedom from the lust for money enables us to pursue Christian virtue� which brings profitable contentment along with it.

The church at Smyrna is not impressive, but it is faithful. Although in difficult circumstances, they will continue to be tested. They are encouraged to persevere, knowing that the victory spoils are well worthwhile.

Our world� and perhaps some Christian teachers� invites us to engage in a lifestyle of indulgence of all kinds. Not just food, or sexual immorality, but all kinds of excess. This teaching� like that of the Nicolaitans in Pergamum� was tempting, dangerous and destructive. The Christians of Pergamum are called to endure and remain true to the gospel. And so are we.

The Letters to the seven churches of Revelation follow a clear structure, and bring a direct message to particular groups of Christians at a particular time. And yet, the �seven� are representative of the whole church. We all need to heed these words, and particularly today as we consider the message to the church at Ephesus.
